Ho Citadel is located in Vinh Loc District of Thanh Hoa Province, about 200km south of Hanoi. The citadel was built mainly from 1397 to 1401 by Ho Quy Ly who was the King of Vietnam in 1397-1407. After ascending the throne, Ho Quy Ly was not supported by the majority of the Vietnamese population and at the same time, Vietnam was on brink of being invaded by the invaders from the north. In a defensive move, Ho Quy Ly ordered the construction of Ho Citadel at Vinh Loc, Thanh Hoa Province hoping to consolidate power to fight the invaders.

he recognition of Ho Citadel as World Heritage makes the total number of World Heritage sites in Vietnam to seven including Hue Citadel, Halong Bay, Hoi An Old Town, My Son Cham Ruins, Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park and Thang Long Citadel (in Hanoi).
