The Sawanworanayok National Museum is one of the provincial museums in Sukhothai Province under the fine Arts Department. It is located on the west bank of the River Yom in Sawankhalok District. This museum was established in 1971 and the inauguration on March 15,1984 was presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The mandate of the museum is to collect and display art and archaeological objects found during excavations and restorations of monuments in the ancient cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai area and the collections which were offered by Phra Sawanworanayok, the former abbot of Wat Sawankharam and the Supreme – Monk of Sukhothai to the Fine Arts Department for the establishment of the National Museum within the compound of Wat.
The galleries are in a two – storey building with two wings. Approximately 3,154 items (according to the registration in 1999), mostly ceramics and Buddha images are the collections of this museum. The Sukhothai wares excavated in the ancient cities of Sukhothai and the other related wares found together are displayed on the first floor ; the Buddha images exhibited according to the categories ; khmer, Sukhothai, Lan Na and Rattanakosin are on the second floor.
