The protected area of Yeak Lom includes a circular crater-lake, believed to have formed by 700,000 years ago, situated amid pristine jungle. The lake is 800 meters in diameter and 47 meters deep, and is ringed by a 2.5 km hiking trail. The indigenous minorities in the area have long considered Yeak Lom a sacred place and the legends talk of mysterious creatures that inhabit the waters of the lake. It is one of the most peaceful, beautiful locations Cambodia has to offer and the water is extremely clear with visibility of up to 5m. It is a great place to take a dip early in the morning or late in the afternoon. There is a small center nearby that has information on ethnic minorities in the province, local handicrafts for sale and suggested walks around the lake. The area is administered by the local Tumpuon minority and proceeds from the entry fee go towards improving life in the nearby villages Boeng Yeak Lom is 5km east of Ban Lung. Turn right off the roads to Bokheo at the stature of the chunchiet husband and wife. Motors are available from around US$1 return, but expect to pay more if the driver has to wait around.
